About Us

Caring for your pets is a family affair. Learn more about the people behind the Barkroyal name.

Since 2005, Barkroyal Pet Resort has built a name for providing happy, comfortable, stress-free stays and a home away from home for Gold Coast pets.

The Freestone family purchased Barkroyal Boutique Pet Resort in 2012, transforming it into a haven for Gold Coast pets. Renowned for their staff training and exceptionally high standards, Barkroyal’s reputation quickly spread as the go-to pet resort for dedicated pet lovers across the Gold Coast. Since then, the team has cared for thousands of Gold Coast family pets with their unique brand of high-quality, animal care with many repeat happy customers.

In June 2021, the Freestone family opened a long awaited second Gold Coast location: Barkroyal Hinterland Pet Resort. Also located in Mount Nathan, this stunning purpose-built facility set on 20 acres was built to up the ante in Gold Coast pet care. It has been designed to offer a new high standard of economical dog and cat boarding – the Premium accommodation; in addition to the Luxury suites and Standard rooms available at the original Barkroyal Boutique.

Craig
Owner

Craig heads up Barkroyal’s groundskeeping and maintenance team, keeping everything at Barkroyal spotlessly clean. When he’s not busy as Chief Poop Scooper, Craig and his team of working dogs form a brilliant team training, performing and competing in sheep dog trial across Queensland. His dogs have featured in shows for Australian Outback Spectacular, Paradise Country, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, the EKKA and entertained thousands at regional and metropolitan shows with herding and shearing displays.

My petsCurrently I have 10 dogs, 9 chickens, 15 sheep and 1 cat who is the boss of them all.

A breed I’d love to have one day…A Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog

Best thing about working at BarkroyalWhen the regular guests arrive and they are so excited to see us. It’s like catching up with a long lost friend.

Something funny or special that only happens at Barkroyal? For VIP guests like Charlie, a Springer Spaniel, Barkroyal is a second home. If Charlie can see me, he will lie down and not move until I’ve given him a pat. He’s nearly pulled staff over trying to get over to me. He’s such a funny boy

My one piece of advice for pet owners would be…We can tell a lot about you from your pets.

Nick
Owner

With his hospitality background, including many years in the coffee industry, Nick heads up our front of house team, where he ensures all our extra special guests feel right at home when they visit Barkroyal. Nick loves greeting guests in reception and being involved in all aspects of operations, especially as Chief of Pats and Cuddles. A mad sports fan, Nick looks forward to playing golf once a week – unlike his dog Friday who is always disappointed to see Nick’s golf shoes appear as she knows she has to stay home

My petsFriday (Border Collie) and Darcy (Domestic Shorthair). Both are rescues.

Best thing about working at BarkroyalWe hear stories all the time from customers that we changed their pet for the better. They went home with more confidence and live a happier existence.

Something funny or special that only happens at Barkroyal?Being part of amazing transformations. Like Zander, a Neo Mastiff, who was rescued from a dog fighting syndicate. With incredible support from his owner and our team, Zander proved that with time, patience, love and care, no pet is beyond rescuing.

My one piece of advice for pet owners would be…If you think dogs can’t count, try putting three dog biscuits in your pocket and then give her only two of them.

Tom
Owner

Making sure Barkroyal operates smoothly is Tom, our Chief of Important Business. Those behind-the-scenes jobs like paying our amazing staff and suppliers would not happen without Tom keeping everything on track. When Tom’s chair is empty, you’ll probably find him fishing, camping or boating – or hopefully all three – and in constant pursuit of reeling in a 1m barramundi.

My petsMilo (Border Collie) and Jazz (Cavalier X Maltese)

Melody
Owner

After meeting her husband Craig through dog training, Mel has successfully built a life around dogs – with a background as an instructor teaching classes, training and competing in dog obedience, agility, scent dog tracking, flyball and competitive frisbee, she has gained a wide and varied knowledge with her diverse experiences. Craig and Melody love dogs so much, they even had their five dogs in their bridal party! Santa visits and we capture a photo of each guest for their owners. The day is always full of fun and usually produces a funny story or two like Santa getting peed on!

My one piece of advice for pet owners would be…Spoil your dog with love not treats. Let your dog live its best life by being in a healthy weight range. If you can’t feel their ribs or see a waist, it’s time to make some changes.

Kristine
Owner

Kristine is the person to thank for all the oohs and aahs on the Barkroyal social media stories. After almost twenty years as a hairdresser, Kristine knows how to present our guests’ good side in our daily guest photos and videos as Chief of Cute Pics.
